Late Own Goal Sinks Saints

September 16, 2017
LOUDONVILLE, NY – An 81st minute own goal proved to be the deciding factor as Fairfield defeated Siena Women’s Soccer 2-1 in the MAAC opener for both teams at Siena Field. Freshman striker Darby D’Angelo scored for the Saints which suffered their first defeat in a conference home opener in 10 years. Sophomore goalie Taylor Dorado made a pair of saves for Siena (4-4, 0-1) which also saw its four-match home winning streak dating back to last season snapped. The Saints out-shot Fairfield (3-4, 1-0) 16-6 and also held a sizeable 9-2 advantage in corners. Siena controlled the action early and capitalized in the 12th minute on D’Angelo’s first career strike. Senior midfielder Casey Scott sent a long cross into the box from the left which D’Angelo headed inside the far right post. The Stags would find the equalizer in the 32nd minute. Gabby Diodati placed a through ball down the left side to Alex Madden who took one touch and finished across inside the far right post. The Saints out-shot the Stags 8-1 in the second half, but the match remained tied into the latter stages. And with just 8:24 remaining, a free kick from 30 yards out from the left by Fairfield’s Diodati deflected off a Siena defender and into the goal for what proved to be the game-winner. Megan DeFeo made five saves to earn the win in goal for the Stags. The Saints return to action Wednesday when they travel to Quinnipiac to face the Bobcats at 3 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s MAAC Semifinals match.
