WEST POINT N.Y. – Freshman forward Ethan Spivack netted his second game-winning goal in as many contests as the Army men’s soccer team blanked Marist, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Clinton Field. With the result, the Black Knights improve to 4-0 overall, while the Red Foxes fall to 0-4.

Four wins marks the program’s best start to a season since 2007, when it also started 4-0. The Black Knights also begin the season with four consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1931.

Sophomore Joseph Chabries scored the first goal of his college career for Army, while sophomore Peter Lee and freshman Alex Jaroscak each picked up their first career assists. Junior goalkeeper Winston Boldt made a season-high five saves during a game in which the Black Knights held a 17-14 advantage in shots, to notch his career-high fourth clean sheet of the season.

For Marist, senior goalkeeper Anthony Sokalski turned away six Army attempts.

“I felt like we were better in possession tonight,” said Army men’s soccer head coach Russell Payne. “We definitely had more of the ball and were able to create more opportunities and not have to defend as much. It was great for Ethan (Spivack) to get another one, and Joe Chabries has been training really well and I was happy to see him score.”

Sophomores Justin Kim and Cody Guerry created dangerous chances during a 6:35 stretch midway through the first half, but neither were able to solve Sokalski and the Marist defense. Each team had seven shots apiece in the 43rd minute before Army delivered two more attempts that were denied by Sokalski in the final 2:23 of the opening frame.

Less than a minute into the second half, Spivack gave the Black Knights a 1-0 advantage after locating a loose ball off a deflected pass from Jaroscak. Army was awarded four corner kicks and three shots in the ensuing 8:15, but was unable to extend its lead. The Black Knights did push out to a two-goal advantage in the 61st minute when Chabries beat Sokalski on his left post after Lee’s cross from the right side. The Red Foxes attempted to mount a comeback, firing five shots during a 20:44 span, but weren’t able to beat Boldt and climb back to within one.

Army is back on the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it hosts Fordham at 7:30 p.m. at Clinton Field.
