Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the men's soccer team took on the Minutemen of UMass on Motamed Field. It took two overtimes and 107 minutes of play to finally determine the victor which belonged to the Panthers, courtesy of a header by senior James Diana to lift Adelphi to a 1-0 victory. The Brown and Gold got their first win under their belt and move to 1-4 while UMass's record stands at 2-1-1.
 
In the first half, despite a 5-3 UMass shot advantage, the Panthers maintained possession of the ball for a good portion of the initial 45 minutes. Their first scoring chance came off of a Minutemen foul, resulting in a free kick about 10 yards back of the box. With the kick taken by freshman Alejandro Penzini, he connected with Nicholas Costa who sailed a shot just high of the net
 
Less than a minute later, UMass charged down the field and posed a threat when Connor Devivo found himself one on one with keeper Ahmad Salamah, but was stopped in his track by the sophomore goalie.
 
Adelphi continued to press on, but could not get deep enough into Minutemen territory to create a scoring opportunity. However, at the 24:20 mark, Omar Edwards sent a pass through the defense up to freshman Alex Tengnaes, but the play was broken up at the last second by UMass's Dominick Skrajewski to keep the game scoreless.
 
In the second, a Jordan Hibbert yellow card resulted in a free kick from just outside the box for the visitors, but Matt Key's attempt was just slightly off the mark, wide left. In the 73rd minute, Brandon Stoneham found some room on the right side from an Omar Edwards pass, and sent a cross to Penzini, but it was just high and the Venezuela native could not get a foot on it.
 
Adam Weinzimer nearly broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when he picked up a loose ball in front of the UMass net and blasted a shot point blank, but Brian Frame was there to meet him, keeping it a 0-0 affair.
 
After 90 minutes of play, either side could not find the back of the net. However, seven minutes into the second overtime, senior Steve Rivera sent in a long cross from the far right side to connect with Diana who headed the ball in perfectly to find the left side of the net, giving his team the 1-0 win.
 
Adelphi was at a 14-2 shot disadvantage but had seven corners compared to the visitor's two. Salamah made four saves in the victory while his counterpart matched him
 
The Panthers are back in action on Friday, September 14 when they travel to Lewisberg, PA to take on the Bison of Bucknell at 7pm.
