No. 17 ODU stifles UNCW, 1-0
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Josue Henriquez scored a goal 28 seconds into the second half to lead the No. 14 Old Dominion men’s soccer team past UNC Wilmington, 1-0, on Tuesday evening at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
ODU (8-2-1) extended its non-conference winning streak to five, while handing UNCW (8-4-2) only its second home loss of the season.
In the 46th minute, Henriquez netted the game’s only score, connecting with fellow senior Ryan Condotta moments after the second half whistle. Henriquez ran onto a through ball from Condotta and finished a one-on-one against the goalkeeper into the lower left corner of the net.
Prior to Henriquez’ goal, the match opened with an evenly-played, scoreless first half. The best opportunity for the Monarchs in the opening half came on a 16th-minute corner kick. David Macsicza directed a header towards goal off of an Ivan Militar cross, but his attempt sailed high.
Following the Monarchs’ score, UNCW put numbers forward to try and find the equalizer, but the Monarch backline of Nick Hutchinson, David Macsicza, Michael Nelson and Garrett Walke along with goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen held strong for ODU’s fourth shutout of the season.
The Seahawks held a 7-5 advantage in shots and 8-5 edge in corner kicks, but were unable to generate many serious scoring chances.
Tiesenhausen finished the match with two saves, including a superb stop on close-range shot early in the first half. Macsicza led the Monarchs with two shots, while Walke and Tyler Edwards also added a shot.
