Ranking the Pac-10 women's recruiting classes
As it pertains to the 2009 Pac-10 recruiting class, it appears that the rich will be getting richer.
The conference champion UCLA Bruins have come away with the strongest cast of newcomers led by standout Neusport forward Zakiya Bywaters.
“She’s a difference-maker,” said UCLA coach Jillian Ellis, during the U18/U20 Women’s National Camp last month. “She’s quick, and a very strong performer.”
The Bruins have reloaded sufficiently and will once again likely have reservations deep into the NCAA’s tournament.
STANFORD
The Cardinal isn’t far behind UCLA in terms of acquiring notable names.
Rachel Quon (Eclipse Select) is an intriguing find at outside back. She’s a tough defender with a knack for attacking, and has plenty of big event experience in her time with US National teams.
Midfielders Alina Garciamendez-Rowold (Dallas Texans) and Mariah Nogueira (Slammers FC) will bring offensive potency along with forward Nina Watkins.
CALIFORNIA
The Golden Bears finished near the middle of the pack in 2010, and received quality additions in Eagles SC midfielder Lauren Battung and Pleasanton Rage defender Jessica Rachel Clark.
USC
The Trojans were a young group last season, and will be a team to watch in 2009.
The addition of forward Courtney Garcia (Slammers FC) doesn’t hurt either. She’s a top player who could make an instant impact.
OTHERS
Oregon, Arizona State and Washington State all have acquired players to look out for in the upcoming season.
For the Ducks, it’s FC Portland midfielder Christina Libke. The Sun Devils will bring in speedy Pleasanton Rage forward Amanda Luxford, while the Cougars have added savvy Sereno SC midfielder Melanie Johnston.
