SI: College soccer season likely canceled
Sports Illustrated reported on Sunday that the Power 5 conferences were leaning toward canceling fall sports until 2021, which includes both men’s and women’s soccer. Last week, NCAA decided to let each Division to make the call on whether to hold fall championships. Division II and Division III quickly decided to cancel their fall sports, and it would not be feasible to hold the sports in the spring.
Officials from the major Division I conferences met over the weekend to discuss holding the fall season. Sports Illustrated cited multiple sources in its report.
“I think by the end of the week the fall sports will be postponed in all conferences,” a source told Sports Illustrated.
The Mid-American Conference postponed fall sports on Saturday, which is viewed as the first domino to fall in the college sports landscape.
Various college soccer coaches have been pessimistic about the prospect of the season in recent weeks with conversations with TopDrawerSoccer.
Sports Illustrated cited the Pac-12 and Big 12 calls on Tuesday as the likely deadline for the official announcement on the season being canceled or postponed.
