Fairfield, Conn. - Senior Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) broke a 1-1 tie with the game-winning goal in the 69th minute to lift the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart at Campus Field. The Seawolves (6-2-0) have now won four straight matches.

"It was a gritty performance on the road. I thought the guys battled hard and did enough to get a good result. We opened up with an early goal and had most of the possession in the first half. We gave up an early second-half goal, but we responded well to giving up that goal. I'm happy that we ended up playing well and getting the result we were looking for."



Goal Recaps

• The game was not even one minute old when the Seawolves got on the board. At the 26-second mark, freshman Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.) headed in a goal off a free kick from senior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) about 10 yards outside of the box from the near corner.
• Sacred Heart's Marcello Castro tied the game just one minute into the second half with a free kick goal from about 20 yards out.
• In the 69th minute, a caused turnover by the Seawolves defense led to the ball on the foot of freshman Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary), who worked his way to the box and then chipped the ball into the air and into the box. A composed Fernandes won a 50-50 challenge with his defender, got the ball down and then placed the ball past the goalkeeper for the score.

• Stony Brook outshot the Pioneers 12-11 and led in corner kicks 3-0.
• The Stony Brook defense did not allow a shot on goal between the 27th minute and the 81st minute of the match.
• Fernandes now has a goal in each of the last three matches and at least a point in 12 of his last 14 matches.
• Fernandes is now tied with Tony Caputo (1987-89) for fourth all-time in Stony Brook history in career goals with 27.
• Fernandes picked up his third game-winning goal of the season, all three coming in the last three games. He now has 10 game-winning goals in his four-year career.
• Fritz has posted at least a point in each of his last four matches.
• Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) passed Phil Lesko (1978-81) for second place all-time in career goalkeeper wins with 24.
• Stony Brook has scored at least two goals in five of its eight matches this season, including in each of the last four.

• The Seawolves are now 14-0-1 under Anatol when they score the first goal of the game.
• This is Stony Brook's first four-game winning streak since 2007, when the team ripped off wins over Hofstra, Columbia, Adelphi and Niagara between Sept. 7 and Sept. 16.
• Stony Brook is now 10-3-3 all-time against Sacred Heart and 5-0-1 in its last six trips to the Pioneers' campus.
