UCSD Men Concede Two Late Goals to Fall, 2-1

September 27, 2015

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team allowed two goals within a span of 1:51 with under 12 minutes to play and ultimately suffered a disheartening 2-1 defeat to visiting Stanislaus State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium.

With the difficult result, UCSD fell to 3-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the CCAA. Stan State is 8-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

It was the Tritons' first home loss since a 2-0 decision against Cal Poly Pomona last Sept. 28. In fact, they had shut out their four previous opponents in La Jolla in 2015 over 380 minutes, while going 3-0-1.

That streak was extended to just beyond 458 minutes before Stan State's equalizer Sunday at the 78:17 mark, as Luis Hernandez hit an acrobatic left-footed shot with his back toward the UCSD goal. The ball came off the inside of the left post and went in. It was the sophomore's second score on the year, with the assist going to senior Jose Ramirez.

A mere 111 seconds later, the roles were reversed, with Hernandez providing the short cross from the left, and Ramirez nodding home at the back post for his sixth.

UCSD needed just 28 seconds at the outset to get on the scoreboard, through a magnificent team goal. Brandon Monteiro Magpayo played a pass up the right flank, and Zachary Lagotta got to the end line before providing a cross. Uly de la Cal flicked it at the near post, with junior midfielder Riley Harbour scoring right-footed for his first of 2015. Assists went to both de la Cal and Lagotta.

Redshirt junior Cameron McElfresh had one save for UCSD. Senior Russ Klabough, the reigning CCAA Player of the Week, wound up with three stops for the Warriors, all in the second half. None was more critical than his penalty-kick save in the 67th minute. Christian Cordell was fouled in the penalty box, and the match official pointed to the spot. Jeff Powers went left with his right-footed kick, but Klabough sprawled out to his right to deny.

UCSD was left to rue its missed chances after creating at least two others that could have put the game away at 2-0. In the 61st, Kyle Panganiban sent a long free kick toward the right side of the box. Klabough came out to retrieve, but Harbour was well-positioned and first to it, heading it in the direction of the penalty spot. Triton freshman Andy Sartor was the only one there, but his header floated through the air and agonizingly came off the right post. In the 72nd, Nick Palano darted into the area on the left side and whipped his right-footed shot just left of the frame.

The loss was UCSD's first to the Warriors in La Jolla since the sides became league opponents in 2000, with the Tritons now 5-1-3 in such meetings.

Daniel Kuczynski, Stan State's senior forward who leads the CCAA with nine goals scored, was forced out of the game in the seventh minute after suffering an apparent injury on a shot that missed the frame. He would not return.

UCSD has a pair of tough road dates up ahead. The Tritons play at No. 14 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Oct. 2, and No. 25 Cal State L.A. on Sunday, Oct. 4.
