UCSD Men Play to Scoreless Draw With CSUSB

September 21, 2015

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The men's soccer teams of UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino could manage no goals between them through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 more of overtime on a quiet Sunday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.

With the result, UCSD moved to 2-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUSB is 3-2-1 overall and also 1-0-1 in league play.

Redshirt junior Cameron McElfresh wound up with a pair of saves for UCSD to earn his third clean sheet of the year and 15th of his career. Junior counterpart Mike Warn had four stops for his first shutout as a Coyote.

The Tritons stayed unbeaten at 4-0-2 against the Coyotes over the last six years in La Jolla since a 2-1 CSUSB triumph in 2009. The Coyotes still haven't scored at Triton Soccer Stadium over the last 578:40, and 502:35 regardless of venue.

UCSD also has not allowed a goal at home in three matches this year over 290 minutes of action, with a pair of 1-0 victories preceding Sunday's stalemate.

The Tritons outshot the Coyotes, 11-8, and managed all four attempts over the two extra periods. The visitors still had arguably the two best chances to break the deadlock. Just under five minutes into the second half, Andy Reyes' blast from the right diagonal was parried nicely to a corner kick by McElfresh, who dove low to his right to just get his hands to the dipping ball. In the 59th minute, Eric Lavery's right-footed free kick straight on from distance smacked off the left post and stayed out.

The Tritons were without Malek BashtiNolan MacSam Palano and Sean Pleskow. Bashti and Pleskow, who were UCSD's leading returning goal-scorers with three apiece in 2014, have yet to appear in a match this season.

UCSD concludes a season-long four-match homestand with two more conference tilts next weekend, hosting Cal State East Bay on Friday, Sept. 25, at 4:30 p.m., and Stanislaus State on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 11:30 a.m. The Triton women will follow at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Admission at Triton Soccer Stadium is free.
