Union 3, SUNY Fredonia
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Union remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-2 victory over SUNY Fredonia at the Flower City Classic. Although they collected six points on the weekend, the Dutchwomen finished as runner-up for the tournament title to host Rochester, which won the tie-breaker based on goal differential.
Union (2-0) is off to its best start since the 2004 campaign.
Breana Derella provided the game-winner in the second half, snapping a 1-1 tie. Standing to the right of the net, Derella redirected a shot taken by Whitney Bickford.
Coach Brian Speck also received a pair of goals from freshmen, including the second in as many games from Emily Dahlstrom, who was named Best Offensive Player of the tournament. Dahlstrom pounced on a rebound in the 75th minute while classmate Katie Monahan opened scoring in the 18th minute off an assist from Stacey Sylvetsky.
Down by two goals, Fredonia (0-2) made a late surge when Kristine Kleine scored with under five minutes left in regulation. The Blue Devils had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Audrey Yokopovich's shot off a corner kick sailed wide.
The Dutchwomen will host the Union Classic next weekend (Sept. 5-6). Union's home opener occures Friday (4 p.m.) against Rochester at College Park. Other teams in the field include Massachusetts-Boston and Wilkes.
