USF women beat UC Riverside

September 11, 2010
(San Francisco) - Ashyln Mazur scored her first goal of the season Friday as the USF Women’s Soccer team defeated visiting UC Riverside 1-0 at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco. With the victory the Dons remain undefeated at home in 2010, boasting a 4-0 mark.

San Francisco improved to 4-2-0 thanks to its first shutout of the season, while UC Riverside dropped to 1-4-0 with the loss.

The last time the Dons went 4-0 to open the home slate was in 1997. This season, San Francisco has outscored opponents 9-4 when playing at Negoesco.

In the opening 45 minutes, the USF defense was the Dons’ strong hold, allowing just three shots. San Francisco posted eight shots in the first half, while taking two corner kicks. Senior captain Ashley O’Brien was a force in the backfield for the Green and Gold, while also firing two shots.

“I think what we did best was put together two halves and we had a solid performance,” O’Brien said. “It was our first shutout of the season. We haven’t had trouble scoring goals but this is the first time we were really tight on defense the entire time and won the game from the back.”

“We are just trying to play our game and not try and do what we aren’t good at,” added the senior. “We’re moving the ball, we’re passing it around and we’re making opportunities and creating chances for ourselves. That’s what we do best and that’s what we are going to continue to do all season.”

San Francisco continued its controlling play in the second half, firing nine shots to UC Riverside’s two.

At 61:32, the Dons’ efforts paid off as Mazur, a sophomore defender, connected with a corner kick from Rita Hurlbut. Mazur tapped the corner into the far right corner of the net, giving USF the game-winner.

“It’s so exciting,” Mazur said. “Rita took the corner kick and I go up every time and finally I hit one in. It’s the best feeling ever putting one in the back and then we kept it 1-0 the whole game.  It was our first shutout tonight leading us in a good direction.”

Freshman goalkeeper Heather Haney earned her first career shutout, in her third career appearance. Haney, who recorded two saves – both in the first period, improved to 2-1-0 on the season. The Highlanders’ Jessica White suffered the loss, while garnering eight saves.

The Dons return to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host Nevada.
