Stanford Women at #1 after big weekend
September 12, 2011
Undefeated Stanford utilized a showdown win over defending national champion Notre Dame to reclaim the #1 spot of the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking for women’s college soccer. Paul Ratcliffe’s Cardinal squad supplanted North Carolina, an upset victim to Texas A&M on Sunday.

The Cardinal are 6-0-1 and have shown no trouble in maintaining the form that has taken them to consecutive national championship matches over the past two seasons. Friday’s game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA title bout, with Stanford gaining a measure of revenge in besting the Fighting Irish in a lightning-delayed contest, 2-1. The Tar Heels drop only as far as #2. If we’re to see Carolina and Stanford face off this year it would have to be in the NCAA Tournament.

The TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking is a running effort to project the postseason NCAA Tournament field, including each automatic conference and at-large qualifier.

The TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s College Team of the Week is chosen after reviewing every match report for Division One soccer. Choosing this week’s winner was a tougher decision than usual, but we ultimately decided on Duke’s Kelly Cobb, who scored 2 goals and added 4 assists in a pair of Blue Devil wins, most notable a 7-2 defeat of Texas A&M.

A freshman forward from Alaska, Cobb has 5 goals and 4 assists for Duke thus far.
