HS: Spring, state, region rankings, June 1
Panther Creek (Cary, N.C.) lived up to the preseason hype, winning the North Carolina Class 4A girls state title and securing No. 1 in this week's state and regional rankings. The victory also will secure a national Top 5 finish for the Raleigh-area program.
Panther Creek started the year ranked No. 1 in North Carolina, in the Carolina Region and No. 6 in the SIMA FAB 50 preseason rankings.
Elsewhere last week, Grandville (Grandville, Mich.) returned to No. 1 among Michigan girls programs as the season heads into the final two playoff weeks. Cheyenne East (Cheyenne, Wyo.), Fargo North (Fargo, Mich.), South Anchorage (Anchorage, Alaska) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Overland Park, Kan.) locked up girls state No. 1 rankings following state title-winning performances.
Only five boys spring-playing states were in action last week, and Dimond (Anchorage, Alaska), Jackson (Jackson, Wyo.) and Snohomish (Snohomish, Wash.) claimed state titles to earn final state No. 1 rankings. Only Iowa and Virginia remain in action this week in boys soccer.
Snohomish started the season ranked No. 1 in Washington and fell out of the Top 7 following a pair of losses. However, this perennial state power climbed back into the mix and entered last week as No. 2.
