Late upset hands No. 1 rank to Houston
Just one game away from a fifth consecutive state title and a third straight perfect season, New Hampshire's Exeter couldn't pull across the finish line in one piece. Bedford registered a massive 1-0 upset over Exeter in the New Hampshire Division I girls state title game to end Exeter's winning streak at 42 games. The goal was just the sixth Exeter had allowed all season, and it was the only time the team had trailed all year. As a result, Exeter lost the No. 1 ranking it had held for nearly two months and could finish the season next week completely out of the NSCAA top 25.
That opened the gates for Tennessee's Houston, which ascended to the top spot after winning state nearly two weeks ago. With one poll left in the fall season, the door is technically still open for Northern California outfit Maria Carrillo to repeat as NSCAA fall national champs, an incredibly rare feat. Reflecting postseason movement, there are nine new teams on the poll this week, including every squad from No. 18-25.
