KL Youth has great shot to win Disney crown

LAKE BUENA VISTA — Luis Pablo Pozzuto hasn’t had too much to worry about this week.
If anything, the only concern the head coach of Kuala Lumpur Youth Soccer had to deal with all week was winning one game by only two goals.
The KL Youth Soccer team traveled from as far as Malaysia to participate in the 2010 Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
They have represented their country well so far in the summer tournament, winning all four of their matches in the Men’s U18 International Club group play.
Initially when Pozzuto became the head coach five years ago, the target of the academy was not to produce professional soccer players. Instead it was created for the boys to play the sport, have fun, and go on to build their career in the real world.
“In the beginning it was just about playing a sport, growing up healthy and having fun and a good life,” said Pozzuto.
Since then, Pozzuto’s team has become recognized.
“Slowly we’re becoming very strong and the boys know that they’re representing a country with no tradition in soccer,” he said. “We train two times a week and then play on the weekends. It’s difficult for us to play in a league in Malaysia because it’s disorganized.”
Pozzuto said KL takes part in European tournaments but this time around chose to play elsewhere. The United State’s gradual interest in soccer was a reason for the decision to play at the Walt Disney World Resort.
“The issue for us is that we normally look for tournaments in Europe,” he said. “Every year we go to Sweden. We decided with the club and the parents to look for something else.
“We chose Disney because we knew that America is keeping up with football. We wanted to compete with different teams.”
Pozzuto — a former professional soccer player — is from Argentina and has implemented the South American style of play to the club. His style differs from the rest of the Malaysian squads, which play with a European flare.
KL is one match away from going back home from Disney with hardware. The international side will face RC Rage Kent’s Krew (New York East) in the final.
The two sides met on the field on Wednesday, with KL taking 4-0 shut out victory.
For a team that was created to give boys the opportunity to play a sport, KL has an opportunity to finish on top.
