Dallas Cup crowns champions in four age groups
April 13, 2009

FRISCO, TEXAS – The final four age groups of the 30th Dallas Cup had their champions crowned here at Pizza Hut Park Sunday, ending the weeklong competition and sending the last of approximately 4,000 competitors home from North Texas.

California picked up its 2nd title of the tournament, adding Real So Cal White’s win in the U16 age group to Saturday’s win by Santa Clara Sporting in the U15 age group. California and Texas certainly did nothing to dent their status as the premier hotbeds of elite youth soccer in the United States with their performances here at the Dallas Cup. It was an all-Texas and all-Academy final in the U19 division, with Dallas Texans defeating Solar SC 4-0. Sao Paulo FC won the SuperGroup again, the Brazilians defeating Vancouver Whitecaps 4-0 in the nightcap.

As always, the staff at the event did a great job to make the experience a good one. The facilities, refereeing and organization were top quality. Special thanks to Tournament Director Randy Jones for helping with various arrangements related to the coverage.

U16 Final: Real So Cal White 2, Arsenal FC 2
(Real So Cal win on penalties 4-2)

Real So Cal produced a double strike of lightning between 15 and 20 minutes into the 1st half. Erick Esquivel knocked home a shot from close range to make it 1-0, with Enrique Ruiz capitalizing on a failed Arsenal clearance shortly afterward to push the score to 2-0.

Arsenal were extended a lifeline when Dane Johnson sent a cross in that eluded the Real goalkeeper. Jon Tovar was on hand to bang home the rebound and make the score 2-1.

In the 2nd half, Norman Mejia’s Real So Cal team produced some good attacking moves early through the midfield play of Erick Esquivel. One of those earned the San Fernando Valley team a corner kick, but Arsenal’s Christian Alvarez headed clear.

But it was Arsenal who scored the next goal, with Luis Fuentes running 40 yards through the middle of the park, cutting to his right and then hitting a shot across his body and into the back of the net to make it 2-2.

Real So Cal’s Enrique Ruiz put on a good move at the top of the area to draw a free kick from 22 yards out. Dennis Martinez took the set piece but blazed his shot over and the match remained even at the 55-minute mark.

Christian Alvarez hit a shot from the edge of the area in the closing minutes that Real So Cal goalkeeper Jordan Dorn parried. Fuentes reached the rebound and hit a rocket blast that Dorn did well to keep out. A minute later, Uly Mosqueda sent in a good serve that Fuentes reached with his head, but Dorn was there to make the save again.

The match was stopped at 70 minutes when Arsenal player Mosqueda was injured via a clash of heads. An ambulance was summoned and players went to the stadium locker rooms. After an approximately 25-minute delay, Real So Cal’s Emmanuel Munguia came close with a drive from the edge of the area, but Adam Zepeda made the save in the Arsenal goal. And the teams went to overtime.

Fuentes went close for Arsenal in the opening minute of overtime, sending a drive just wide from the edge of the area. Minutes later he showed a great touch and put Tovar in on goal, but the subsequent shot was saved and rebound effort wasted. In truth the game seemed lose most of its sizzle after the head injury to Mosqueda.

The match went to penalties. Real So Cal goalkeeper Jordan Dorn saved the 2nd Arsenal attempt, but Zepeda followed in kind with a diving stop from Real So Cal’s 3rd effort, and then the Arsenal shooter knocked his effort off the post. Real So Cal’s Esquivel drove his spot kick home, but Jordan Kluz kept Arsenal alive by slotting home his team’s 4th. Dennis Martinez then stepped up and drilled a shot just under the crossbar to give Real So Cal White the victory.
