Spartans battle hosts to scoreless draw
GETTYSBURG, PA. – Junior goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) added another superb effort to her resume Saturday, Aug. 31, keying Manchester University to a double-overtime draw with highly-touted Gettysburg College.
The Spartans, wrapping up the Gettysburg Cup with an 0-1-1 record, received the full force of a strong Bullets’ offense throughout the evening. The home side rifled 34 shot attempts at their guests, but Willmann wound up with a 110-minute clean sheet and 16 saves which included a penalty kick try.
MU did get four strikes of its own in the Gettysburg end. Junior midfielder Sofie Tzortzinis (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior forward Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.) each forced saves from the home team’s goalkeeper.
The Black and Gold continue a brief three-match road trip Tuesday, Sept. 3, when they journey north to face off against in-state rival Trine University. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
NOTES: Willmann’s 16-save night tied a personal match high for her, as she recorded the same total in a meeting with Transylvania during her freshman season. … It’s the eighth time in her career she’s registered 10-or-more saves.
