Probably for every team playing Wednesday except for 8th-seeded Clemson, the only thing winning meant is that they didn’t lose. The top seven teams are surely in the 48-team NCAA field.

Virginia beat Maryland on Tchani’s late winner, with the match played in a perfect storm. Edvin Worley scored in OT to give Boston College a 1-0 win over Duke, the matches going on simultaneously on adjacent fields, youth soccer style. NC State defeated North Carolina on penalties while Wake Forest had a virtual goal glut against Clemson, winning 3-0 on goals from Andy Lubahn (2) and Luke Norman.
