ORLANDO, Florida - In anticipation of the week long matches at the Disney Cup International Youth Soccer Tournament, two events set the event off on a festive note. Check out the opening ceremony video here.
The Disney Coronado Springs Resort hosted the World Cup Finals viewing party, where everyone kept their attention glued to the different televisions showing the game.
Both Spain and the Netherlands saw large number of supporters, with each cheering and screaming throughout the match.
For Juan Sebastian Rohrmann, the head coach of JS Academy, coming to the Disney Cup provides one of the best experiences available. His squad, a U11 team, is making the trip for the third consecutive time from Guatemala.
“For them it’s the world,” Rohrmann said, of what this trip means to his team. “They really just love to compete. They love the parks, they love the hotel, the pool, but their main focus is the tournament.”
Following Spain’s first World Cup championship and some celebrating from a large part of the crowd, the party continued at EPCOT with the opening celebration. Only a large gate separated the families from the theme parks, with a DJ providing music while the families ate from the buffet dinner.
After eating, the teams danced and only then did they go into the park for the fireworks Illuminations: Reflections of Earth at EPCOT.
With all of the festivities out of the way, it is now time for the competition to get under with each country bringing a different style of soccer onto the field. Each country and team participating is looking forward to showing the spectators what they can accomplish on the field come Monday.
Rohrmann said Guatemala does not have a strong national team like other countries, but to play against kids from Brazil, a nation that they root for in the World Cup, they feel like they are playing at another level of soccer.
Naturally, there is no incentive to want to play for the national side in Guatemala, but participating in a tournament of this nature can provide these young players plenty of incentives to eventually want to play for the national team, said Rohrmann.
“When they come and see the love of the sport, it gives them an incentive to want to try and join the national team and do it with the utmost seriousness,” Rohrmann said.
