Signing Day anticlimactic but happy for most soccer families
February 3, 2010
Wednesday is National Signing Day, the first day high school senior soccer recruits across the country can officially sign a National Letter of Intent to play at the college of their choice.
It’s a big event in the life of many soccer families, signifying a major goal reached (perhaps the biggest) in their respective soccer journeys. The day lacks the same drama you get in college football recruiting for a number of reasons:
Additionally our College Commitments page will be updated more frequently than ever as more and more schools announce their 2010 recruiting classes and we get the information to you.
Even as we wrap up our coverage of this class, interest in the 2011s and 2012s will heat up considerably. Remember to SHARE your information on those players as their recruiting process develops.
It’s a big event in the life of many soccer families, signifying a major goal reached (perhaps the biggest) in their respective soccer journeys. The day lacks the same drama you get in college football recruiting for a number of reasons:
- Each DI program in college football has 85 scholarships, compared to a maximum of 9.9 in men’s and 14 in women’s soccer.
For some, today is the most important day of their life.
- With the a mount of money and scholarships available to football players, players are much more likely to wait until the actual signing day to make up their mind, both for the sake of quasi-celebrity status and the rightful exercise of free choice in where they want to go to school.;
- Conversely, with much less money available on the soccer side, schools enjoy a seller’s market so to speak, allowing them to prod top recruiting prospects into making their verbal commitments a year or more ahead of their class’s signing day.
