U23 MNT defeats San Antonio Scorpions 3-0
February 25, 2012
The U.S. U-23 Men's National Team defeated the San Antonio Scorpions 3-0 in a scrimmage Friday night. Goals from Brek Shea, Dilly Duka and Jack McInerney gave the U-23s a comfortable victory in front of a spirited crowd on Field 4 at The Complex at FC Dallas Stadium.
The USA started the game in their customary 4-3-3 under head coach Caleb Porter and from the outset they enjoyed the upper hand. The Scorpions, playing their first game as a newly formed NASL franchise, were on the back foot from the first whistle, with the U-23s enjoying the lion's share of possession in the first forty-five minutes. The best chance to go ahead came from Brek Shea, who struck the crossbar with a dipping strike midway through the half.
Just after the restart, the Scorpions had their best chance of the game. A fizzing strike from 16 yards was palmed away by goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The DC United shotstopper was only on as a sub for a few minutes before being called to make a vital intervention with his first touch of the game.
After that it was all U-23s, and the introduction of Agudelo at halftime gave the USA an added lift. After springing the offside trap, the forward was put through by Duka in the 53rd minute before squaring for an onrushing Shea to smash home from 15 yards.
The Scorpions had resisted valiantly until that point, but the second goal was not far behind the first. Nine minutes later Duka got on the scoresheet himself, scooping up a loose ball on the left side of the 18-yard box before rifling a low shot through traffic and into the goal.
The U.S. completed the scoring and put the game easily out of reach when Jack McInerney latched on to fellow substitute Tony Taylor's cross for a close range header in the 78th minute.
"I thought we controlled the game from start to finish," said Porter. "Tonight was good because it tested our patience. But we stuck with it, kept moving the ball. and eventually wore them down.
Porter was able to draw a parallel between tonight's game and the type the team could face during CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying, pointing out that one thing his team can expect is for teams to put numbers behind the ball like the Scorpions did on Friday.
"It didn't come easy [tonight]. The first goal took some time and that happens in soccer when a team sits behind the ball. It can be difficult to break down lots of numbers, no matter who you're playing, and that's most likely going to be a similar game to one we'll see in qualifying."
Despite cold weather, there was a spirited crowd on hand to take in the scrimmage. U.S fans turned out to watch the U-23s, while a special mention has to go to the Scorpions fans who traveled about four hours to watch the team's inaugural game.
With two scrimmage wins under their belt, the U-23 Men's National team has a lot of positives to take heading toward Wednesday's game with Mexico. It's into the pool tomorrow for regeneration, then back on the field Sunday night.
