BOYS

The first game of the morning was the boys 1998 division, Cal South against Maryland.

Cal South came out with a lot of energy and caught Maryland looking in the first minute of the game when a long pass out to Cal South’s Samuel Hefter led to a foul inside the box and a penalty kick that was easily scored by Sebastien Des Pres to put Cal South up 1-0 after only two minutes of play.

The quick lead for Cal South seemed to demoralize Maryland from the start as Cal South made Maryland keep up with its fast pace.

It was only moments later when Cal South’s Aron Rudich made a long pass up to Hefter that Hefter was able to push past Maryland’s goalie for the score, giving Cal South the 2-0 lead after only four minutes of play.

Maryland was unable to penetrate the Cal South defense even when the offense was able to move in to score Cal South did a fantastic job of staying on their man as a unit.

Maryland’s offense made a move in the 12th minute when forward Benjamin Dao finally broke free and had a shot on goal from the left side of the box but the shot was easily saved by Cal South’s goalie Jerry Fitschen.

Maryland was doing a good job of winning the 50-50 balls in the midfield but could not get past Cal South’s tight defense.

Cal South kept pushing the ball in the first half and were able to score again in the 34th minute this time on a long pass from Chad Morgan from the left side to Milo Barton who one-timed it into the back of the net that gave Cal South the 3-0 lead.

Cal South put another one up on Maryland in the second half to seal the game at 4-0. Maryland made few but costly mistakes in the first half that led to easy quick goals from Cal South that decided the game early on.

Cal South spread the ball around and had four different players score Sunday morning to seal the victory and the championship for their team.

Fitschen had another clean sheet on the day and did not give up any goals this weekend for Cal South.

In the second game of the morning, Cal South in the 1997 boys division faced Iowa for the 1997 boys division championship game.

The game was close and had to be decided on penalty kicks.

Cal South escaped with a 7-5 win after goalie Marcus Norris was able to stop two penalty kicks that sealed the victory for the team.

The first half was tight and both teams failed to convert on defensive mistakes by both sides. After one half of play the game was tied at 0-0.

Iowa came out pushing the ball every time they had a chance and were able to score first in the 53rd minute when Eduvie Ikoba scored on a nice pass on the right side of the box to put Iowa up 1-0.

Cal South’s Marco Bueno who scored a goal in Friday’s game responded with a goal of his own only four minutes later to tie it up at 1-1 and give Cal South the momentum they had been looking for.

The teams exchanged two more goals each, the last one coming in the 89th minute as Iowa tied it up to send it into penalty kicks.

Unfortunately for Iowa, Cal South’s goalie Norris was able to stop two penalty kicks to seal the victory and championship for Cal South.

GIRLS

On the girl’s side the first championship game was in the 1998 division, Cal South played against Virginia.

Cal South came into Sunday’s game after scoring six on Illinois in Friday’s afternoon match.

That momentum carried into Sunday’s game with Cal South defeating Virginia for the championship 1-0.

Kennedy Smith who had one goal in Friday’s game scored in the first minute for Cal South that ended up being the deciding goal as Virginia who made a valiant effort could not recover from the first half score.

Cal South relied on its bigger players to keep Virginia from getting into any rhythm throughout the match.

The second half was more of the same as Virginia made attempts to get back into the game but the defense plus the play of goalie ensured the win for Cal South.

Cal South won the championship behind seven goals scored and two clean sheets in the process.

In the second game for the girls, the 1997 division Cal South team played against the 1997 Illinois squad.

Cal South shut out Florida on Friday afternoon 3-0 and continued this streak by beating Illinois 3-0 Sunday morning in what was another clean win for the Cal South team.

Once again it was a quick goal in the opening moments of the game that put Cal South on track for the championship.

The goal came in the fourth minute when Katie Pingel got a shot past the goalie and gave Cal South the lead.

Cal South’s size proved to be too much for Illinois as Cal South dominated the 50-50 balls and were able to get past the defense of the Illinois team.

Illinois made a few runs to get the ball in front of the net but Cal South continued its defensive pressure and would not allow a clean shot from Illinois.

Midfielder Peyton Perea scored in the 28th minute to put Cal South up 2-0 and made it tough for Illinois to get back into the game.

Going into half Cal South led 2-0 and kept putting pressure on Illinois to force the ball up the field.

Illinois came out with some energy in the second half but after almost 15 minutes of playing in the midfield they could not get a clean shot off on the Cal South defense.

And in the 79th minute Cal South’s Hayley Mayne scored on a close shot in the box to seal the victory for Cal South, 3-0 over Illinois.
