In an effort to smooth out the pathway from the academy to first team, MLS launched its own league, MLS NEXT Pro last year.
The results were mixed in terms of overall quality – a high level men’s college program tends to feature better play – though the identification process has helped players earn first-team contracts.
It’s also an outlet for academy players to get a first taste of a pro environment. This season, which begins this weekend, will prove to be no different. Here’s a look at some of the academy players to watch that should feature.
