An inside look at the Top 100 2011 Girls ranking
October 23, 2009
With the Top 100 2011 Girls ranking having been released yesterday we take a closer look at who was chosen for the first edition of the ranking.
A breakdown of the list, by the numbers:
California Love: The state shaped like a boot kicked butt as far as overall representation, staking claim to 25 of the top 100 spots. Our math was never very good, but that’s 25 percent … right?
Molly PolettoVania Robles was the highest ranking member, taking the seventh spot.
Join the club: The Dallas Texans take the title for most players on the ranking, with six. (22) Kelley Monogue, (37) Whitney Jaynes, (67) Hayley McKinney, (73) Clarissa Wedemeyer, (86) Taylor Schneider and (87) Rosa Medina made a strong state-ment (pun intended) for a region that also boasted the top player, Coppell, Texas’ own, Chioma Ubogagu.
Scintillating Six: Just six elite goalkeepers made the ranking, lead by (54) Sarah Voigt, of Ponte Vedra. Voigt is joined by (69) Megan Kufeld, (70) Darcy Hargadon, (74) Britt Eckerstrom, (87) Rosa Medina and (100) Molly Poletto.
Where’d you say you’re from?: Not every player on the list comes from a large club. More than a few players are represented by clubs that don’t ring the same bell as some of the powerhouse clubs.
(81) Alexandra Cook, for instance, plays for the Chicago Fire Juniors of Mississippi. Now if she played for the Chicago Fire it would ring much more familiar, but as it is she’ll help bring a little light to a club many people don’t know much about.
(64) Ariana Aston, represents Syosset SC of New York, while (61) Emma Brown hails from Mockingbird SC from Louisville’s Mockingbird Valley.
Player spotlight: Amy Kauffung, of FC Milwaukee, is currently ranked 39 on her list thanks to her tenacious defensive skills as a center back.
While small in stature, Kauffung is strong and has great 1v1 defending ability. Having been with the club for a few years, Kauffung brings a steady, positive influence on the players around her.
“She’s a very confident player who has a way of slowing the game down for her teammates because of her technical ability,” said FC Milwaukee coach Christian Lavers. “She’s quick, and very two-footed. She’s consistent and never gets rattled; definitely one of the very best we have at our club.”
And according to our ranking, one of the best we have in the country.
