Development Academy Recap: Penultimate part

The penultimate weekend of the Development Academy regular season provided plenty of astounding results as teams jockeyed for playoff spots and division titles. From lopsided victories to surprising upsets, the loaded slate of games from the past weekend had it all.

WEST

LA Galaxy U18 clinched the Southwest Division in commanding fashion as the MLS academy defeated Strikers FC 14-1 on Saturday. The win pushed Galaxy to the top of the division standings and into seventh for the national standings. Axel Mendez led the way in the first half with a hat trick, as Galaxy sewed up the result in the opening 45 with a 6-0 lead at the break. Galaxy also picked up a win in the U16 game as well. Rey Ortiz scored the lone goal, his fifth of the season, in the first half. Galaxy and Strikers battled to a 2-2 draw in the U14 game.

Pateadores U16 wrapped up a successful campaign on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Chivas USA. Alejandro Carrillo scored a hat trick in 16 minutes in the second half to put the game to bed. Mathew Davis and Cesar Rodriguez also scored for Pats, which enter the postseason as the top seeded wildcard team. Chivas USA won the U18 tilt 4-2 and the two clubs played to a 2-2 draw in the U14 game.

Real So Cal U18 topped Nomads 2-1 on Sunday in the final regular season game for both teams. Real So Cal finished as the top seed in the wildcard standings and third in the division with 61 points from 28 games. Nomads are in the playoff dance as well as one of the last wildcard teams to earn a spot.

EAST

Oakwood Soccer Club pulled off an impressive sweep on Saturday as the Connecticut club defeated New York Red Bulls in the U16 and U18 age groups. Oakwood won the U18 game 2-1 thanks to Brendan Constantine’s game-winning tally. Oakwood also won 2-1 in the U16 game. It marked the first time this season that NYRB had lost in both age groups on the same day.

Georgia United kept control of the final wildcard spot in the U18 age group with a 3-0 win over North Carolina Fusion on Sunday. The work is not over for United though, as two games next weekend could be the deciding fixtures of the season for the team.

CENTRAL

Solar Chelsea SC U18 picked up a 3-2 win over FC Dallas on Saturday to finish as the third place team in the Frontier Division and snag the automatic berth to the postseason. Solar finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak. FC Dallas won the U16 game 3-1.

Sockers FC U16 suffered through a tough week with losses to Chicago Magic PSG and Crew Soccer Academy, as the Illinois team tries to hold onto a wildcard spot. Sockers dropped to the final wildcard spot, 13th, with the string of negative results. They finish the regular season next weekend against Indiana Fire Academy.

Next week’s match is also meaningful to Indiana Fire Academy in the U18 age group. Indiana defeated Crew Soccer Academy Wolves 2-1 on Saturday to move into the third spot in the division standings. Rece Buckmaster and Connor Corrigan scored in the win. Tristan Jacob scored for CSA Wolves.
