Dynamo sign McCue to Homegrown deal
The Houston Dynamo have added another Homegrown player.
Defender Erik McCue signed a contract with the first team, the club announced earlier this week. He'll officially be rostered at the start of 2019.
“We are pleased to announce Erik McCue as a Homegrown signing for the Houston Dynamo First Team. He has demonstrated a strong mentality, work ethic and willingness to learn that is necessary to take this next step in his career,” Dynamo Senior Vice President and General Manger Matt Jordan said in a release. “Erik has been a standout performer with both the U-17 and U-19 teams in our Academy and has benefited greatly from his time with our USL team and training with the First Team. I’d also like to acknowledge the hard work of our Academy and First Team staffs in helping Erik’s growth as a player. As a club, we understand that becoming a professional is a process and we look forward to helping Erik continue to grow and develop.”
A central defender, McCue made 29 appearances for the Dynamo in the 2017-18 season for both the U-17 and U-19 squads. Prior to joining the Dynamo, he was a member of the D.C. United Academy, playing sparingly in the two previous seasons. Born in 2001, McCue will continue to compete for the Dynamo U19 squad before making the move to the first team at the start of 2019.
Born in Onsala, Sweden, McCue has lived in Europe, Asia and Washington D.C. prior to moving to Houston last year. He's a dual national eligible to represent the United States and Sweden.
McCue is the tenth player to join the Dynamo from its Academy. Homegrown players making the grade in Houston have a spotty history, as the team only has three of those 10 players currently on the roster.
