Eagles star takes advantage of opportunities
September 16, 2010
To have the opportunity to play for a national team is an honor and the biggest highlight for a soccer player’s career. To grab the attention of two national teams, now that’s just a case of unbelievable talent. Christina Murillo has the luxury to revel in that fact that she has played for both U.S. and Mexican Youth National Teams.
The Eagles SC multi-faceted player is one of the best players in the country and U17 Girls Eagles SC Head Coach Vince Thomas explains why.
"She is simply one the best soccer players around. Wherever we put her, she has the ability to help us out,” says Thomas. “I have used Christina in every position on the field playing center back, center-mid, and up front, where she has the composure to set people up to score.”
Christina MurilloThis composure that Christina possesses is mostly attributed to all that she has learned with Southern Californian club Eagles SC, which she has played for since her early youth.
“We’ve always prided ourselves in playing an attractive style that allows the players to just play soccer and keep possession,” said Thomas. “It’s easy on the eyes, and where there is flow in the play, the players themselves stand out.”
Christina has taken every advantage of being noticed. Early in her career she was invited to US National Team training camps for the U15 Girls squad and played in the ODP Interregional matches for the U15 U.S. Youth National Team. But lately Mexico has courted her services, calling her up to the U17 Mexico YNT.
It seems that Christina is leaning towards the latter option, as she just finished participating in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the Mexican side. While Mexico was eliminated in the group stage at that event, held in Trinidad & Tobago, Christina managed to score a goal in the team’s lone win, a 4-0 victory over South Africa.
She has even been called up the full Mexican Women’s Team, getting one cap under her belt, according to Coach Thomas.
These opportunities have strengthened Christina’s play beyond the club level.
“She has gained another lever of confidence that has allowed her to keep better possession of the ball,” explained Thomas.
It is those proficiencies that will lead Christina from Ventura County to Ann Arbor, as she has committed to play for the University of Michigan and Head Coach Greg Ryan beginning next fall.
But before, Coach Thomas hopes that the return of his star player will be the key for success, as the U17 Girls Eagles SC team will be competing in the Far West Regional League this fall.
“With Christina coming back, she is going to be that star player that we could turn to in the game,” added Thomas. “Being able to incorporate Christina in the line-up, it gives everybody the confidence that we can win everything.”
Christina will play alongside Lyndsey Preston, Ally Courtnall, Stewart Tamarah, and Morgan Valenzuela, just to name a few, when the U17 Girls Eagles SC competes in the Far West Regional League and beyond.
