Family ties deliver star to top program

Family ties deliver star to top program

The scouting report on Brittain Dearden has always been that she can play anywhere. And I guess the same could be said for her college outlook.

But finding the right somewhere was key, and Dearden, our No. 37 ranked player in the 2013 class Top 100, found it in BYU where she plans to head for the 2013 season.

The Cougars made Dearden’s final list of programs along with Virginia and Duke, but BYU had a strong inside track that the other schools just couldn’t match.

“Both my parents are alumni of BYU, and Utah is like a second home to me since I have a lot of family there,” said Dearden, a very versatile defender for PDA. “BYU has a special atmosphere that is hard to match, along with a great soccer program and coaching staff.”

And now, they also have Dearden. Having played in the U.S. Youth National Team program and in critical matches throughout her club career she should be well suited to make a strong impact at the next level.

And where on the field will she play? How about anywhere she wants.

“Whatever position I end up playing I want to continue to bring a technical strength on the field and my passion for the game,” she said.

Another standout defender to make her commitment recently was Jenna Romano, No. 22 in our 2013 Top 100, who verbally committed to Wake Forest.

Romano also had eyes for West Virginia and Kentucky before settling on the Demon Deacons.

“The style of play really suits me well (at Wake Forest),” Romano said. “I am a person that loves to play possession; playing out of the back and creating opportunities for my team is the way I have grown up playing.

“Since I will most likely be playing center back, I think I will bring strong, competitive, and technical aspects to the team.”
