FIFA cancels women's youth tournaments
In light of the continued effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on global soccer, FIFA announced that the 2020 editions of the women's Under-20 and Under-17 World Cups, will no longer take place.
Both events had already been shifted to early 2021, with Costa Rica slated to host the Under-20 World Cup and India scheduled to welcome the Under-17 competition.
However, not all federations had completed qualifying competitions for both tournaments -- for example, the U.S. had qualified for the U20 edition but the Concacaf qualifying event for the U17s had yet to take place -- and with that uncertainty lingering over the event, combined with the continued impact of the pandemic, FIFA made the decision to call off the event for next year.
FIFA also announced that the intended hosts of the 2020 competition will reprise their roles for next cycle, with Costa Rica hosting the U20 World Cup and India to host the U17 edition of the tournament in 2022.
