GSA Premier, PDA 2000s leap ahead at U13

Talk about peaking at the right time.

Atlanta based GSA Premier flew under the radar all year, finishing a disappointing 10th in the spring season of the Georgia Youth Soccer state league (albeit playing up a year in the U14 age group) and suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to new No. 1 Baltimore Celtic Dynasty in the semifinals of the Disney Showcase back in December. But Dave Robinson’s squad put all that behind them, taking the Georgia Youth Soccer state cup crown at the beginning of June, followed by a championship run at the USYS Region III tournament. Those tournament titles provided a bid to this month’s USYS National Championships and the No. 14 spot in the Grande Sports Academy TeamRank Top 25. GSA will get a rematch of the Disney semifinal when it faces Baltimore Celtic Dynasty in the opening match at nationals on July 22.

PDA 2000s spent the year anywhere from eighth to fourth in US Club Soccer’s Northeast Pre-Academy League, losing to New York Red Bulls 2000 twice early on in the season. But when playoffs arrived, PDA’s defense was impenetrable, positioning them for a 1-0 defeat over NYRB to win the NEPAL championship. It was smooth sailing from there, with PDA’s defense not allowing a single goal until the championship final, a 7-1 defeat of No. 10 Raiders FC. With a national championship under their belt, PDA climbs from No. 20 to No. 5.

Real So Cal, Weston top Development Academy at U14

Although New York Red Bulls finished the Development Academy season with the best points per game average in the country, Real So Cal and Weston made it through with just one loss a piece, a significant feat in a league filled with the best players in the country.

Real So Cal had a dominating offense powered by Class of 2017 IMG Academy 150 forward Jason Manning and his teammate Class of 2018 IMG Academy 150 standout Wilson Harris. Manning finished the season with 29 goals, and Harris ended with a “mere” 15. Real’s outstanding season could only be capped by a No. 1 ranking in the Grande Sports Academy TeamRank Top 25.

Weston provided firepower of its own, with two youth national team attendees at the helm. Class of 2018 No. 27 Nicolas Garcia-Morillo provided a team leading 28 goals, with No. 4 George Acosta providing 14 more from the midfield. One of Weston’s toughest matches was a come-from-behind victory to end the season against Georgia United. Garcia-Morillo provided the game winner in the final minute to preserve Weston’s one loss season and a No. 2 ranking.

Wolves streak continues at U15

Michigan Wolves 99 continued their winning ways in June, taking the USYS Region II championship and a bid to USYS Nationals. The Wolves will face fellow USYS National League opponents No. 1 Loudoun Red and No. 7 Solar Red next week when the tournament begins. Loudoun and Solar, like the Wolves, won their respective regional championships on their way to nationals, but unlike Wolves, both had winning seasons in national league play. The Wolves will look to avenge its national league loss to Loudoun in group play when they meet each other again on Wednesday, July 23.

Next Thursday: U13, U14, and U15 Girls

Grande Sports Academy TeamRank Top 25 is the comprehensive team-ranking system devised by TopDrawerSoccer.com to provide an objective and common-sense approach to determining which elite youth soccer teams are the best in the nation.

The rankings, updated monthly, are primarily results-based, with a nod toward the league and championship competitions that emulate how excellence is determined in leading soccer nations around the world.

Tournaments are also included but at a reduced value due to the many mitigating factors involving such events, including attrition and guest players.

A final layer of executive evaluation is provided to account for variables that often impact results, thus ensuring that the monthly lists are not subjective, but are not purely mechanical.
