Here are the top four men’s freshmen classes
August 26, 2011

In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been reviewing freshmen signing classes across the country for most of the offseason. So now that the season has returned we’re giving you our ‘best of’ addition. Here are the top four signing classes in the men’s game.

NORTH CAROLINA

The Tar Heels truly came away with offseason gold. We reviewed their can’t-miss class a couple months back and we’re looking forward to seeing some of these fresh faces on the field.

Signed: Nathan Diehl (Birmingham United), Ryan Dodson (Sockers FC), Darvin Ebanks (Gwinnett Soccer Association), Sam Euler (Chicago Fire), Matt Hedges (Indy Burn), Miguel Lopez (Classics Elite), Jordan McCrary (Concorde Fire), Boyd Okwuonu (FC Dallas), Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler (CASL)

Skinny: Chances are you're familiar with the names of a few of the aforementioned players - if you're not, you will be. This North Carolina class boasts six Top 100 prospects and a collection of faces that will carry on the Tar Heels tradition through the next couple of years.

The Top 100 stars include: Okwuonu (No. 13), Ebanks (No. 18), McCrary (No. 22), Lopez (No. 52), Dodson (No. 57) and Vandermaas-Peter (No. 64). Okwuonu and Ebanks are two of the top defenders in the country, both with a combination of U.S. National Team and international experience. McCrary has similar experience along with some of the smoothest ball skills you'll find. Lopez, Dodson and Vandermaas-Peeler will bring attacking prowess to a program already loaded and ready to challenge for a national title.

DUKE

Did we save the best for last? Our final men’s Signing Day Analysis was highlighted by the Blue Devils and their stellar new collection of talent. See for yourself.

Signed: Jake Butwin (Alberston SC), Sean Akira Davis (New York Red Bulls), Nat Eggleston (DC United), Chase Keesling (CASL), Andrew Morales (CASL), Nick Palodichuk (Seattle Sounders), Matt Slotnick (Hicksville Strikers), Riley Wolfe (LA Galaxy)

Skinny: Dynamite class for the Blue Devils. Palodichuk, Davis and Wolfe were Top 100 prospects who should be great college additions. Eggleston is a standout defender who has experience in the U.S. National Team program.

This is exactly the kind of injection the program needs if it wishes to get over the hump against the rest of the ACC powers.

VIRGINIA

Ryan Zinkhan
Score another one for the ACC. The Cavaliers have a class that stacks up with anyone in the country. We told you as much back in February.

Signed: Eric Bird (Beach FC Fire), Matt Brown (Charlotte Soccer Academy), Spencer LaCivita (CASL), Kyle McCord (New York Red Bulls), Calvin Rezende (Weston FC), Grant Silvester (California Development Academy), Chris Somerville (Baltimore Bays), Kyler Sullivan (Arlington Venom), Ryan Zinkhan (Richmond Strikers)

Skinny: The Cavaliers class features four players who were ranked No. 32 or lower in our Top 100 List. There are special, game-changing players at a variety of positions here and Virginia will understandably have high expectations for its first-year crop.

FURMAN

All in all, Furman was the story of the offseason. We’ve come to expect colossal classes from the ACC powers but not necessarily from the Paladins. They delivered one in a big way.

Signings: George Fradenburg (Birmingham United), Nikolai Hammer (Clearwater Chargers), Trent Johnson (Charlotte Soccer Academy), Adrian McInnis (Chicago Fire Juniors of LA), Kevin Pahl (Clearwater Chargers), Tyler Peoples (GSA Phoenix Red 93), Clint Ritter (Dallas Texans), Dennis Sanchez (Shattuck St. Mary's), Eric Steber (CASL Chelsea), Walker Zimmerman (GSA Phoenix Red 93), Hart Zwing (South Carolina United)
Skinny: Who would have predicted that Southern Conference champion Furman would come away with one of the top signing classes in the country? Well, it did.

The class is highlighted by three of the best 25 prospects in our Top 100. Midfielder Fradenburg is a natural left-footer with good speed and a good work ethic; Pahl is also a highly skilled midfielder with national team experience while Zimmerman is just one of the defenders who should instantly impact the Paladins. Defender Steber is another. Furman also adds two capable goalkeepers in Sanchez and Johnson.
