National Cup X Regional titles awarded

CHARLESTON, S.C. – This summer’s opening weekend of National Cup X Regional action concluded Monday as competitions came to a close in LaGrangeville, N.Y., and Vero Beach, Fla., where a total of 25 teams earned Regional championships.

At the LaGrangeville Regional, 19 titles were handed out to teams representing 14 different clubs. That total included a trio of championships for Eastern FC, which claimed the U-13, U-14 and U-17 Boys’ Premier Groups.

“From U-12 to U-17, we had eight teams in contention on the final day of the Regional and we were able to pull off three championships for the second year in a row,” said Eastern FC Boys’ Director Beau Morki. “We do build up for this tournament and our coaches put in many hours to help the teams be ready for the event. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing for our players to be able to compete for a national championship.”

Included among the championship squads from Eastern FC was the U-17 Magic, a team which already has a history of success in the National Cup. Back in 2007, the team claimed a National Cup VI national championship in the U-13 Premier Group.

“There are still three players on the Magic from the team that won the National Cup back in 2007,” said Morki of the club’s first of two all-time National Cup titles. “That’s a testament to the club and how we try to develop talent and keep kids in our club.”

Leading the way with four LaGrangeville Regional titles was Ironbound SC, which swept the U-14 through U-17 Boys’ Super Groups. That included repeat Regional championships for the Fury (U-15), Inter (U-16) and Predators (U-17).

Teams from six different clubs earned Regional championships during the Vero Beach Regional. For the second straight year, the event was held at Hobart Soccer Complex.

National Cup X Regionals will continue through July 12 in a total of 10 cities. Regional-winning teams in the U-13 through U-17 age groups earned berths in the National Cup X Finals, to be played July 29-Aug. 1 in Boise, Idaho.

Regional play resumes June 11-14 with action in Modesto, Calif. (Boys).
