NCAA Programs begin announcing signing classes
February 5, 2010
Continuing our look at top recruiting classes from around the country…..
(remember, schools often do not announce their full recruiting class until well past National Signing Day)
North Carolina provided a perfect example of the rich getting richer. Anson Dorrance, recruiting wizard Chris Ducar and the rest of the Tar Heels’ staff were able to bring in 5 of the top 11 players on this year’s Top 100 list. While it’s true that a program that has won 20 NCAA championships has a certain ability to make self-fulfilling prophecies (if a player commits there they are likely to be among the best), but players like Avalanche Premier forward Kealia Ohai, Vardar goalkeeper Anna Sieloff, Albertson SC defender Crystal Dunn, Montclair SC defender Meagan Morris and Ohio Elite attacker Elizabeth Burchenal were attracting attention long before they had verbally committed to play their college soccer in Chapel Hill.
Vanessa Laxgang (black)UNC’s rival up tobacco road, the Duke Blue Devils also snagged 5 of the top 100 players as Robbie Church and his staff look to rebound from a sub-par 2009 campaign. Replacing the standout duo of Elisabeth Redmond and KayAnne Gummersall will be very difficult, but players like Triangle FC and youth national team fullback Mollie Pathman, Dallas Texans’ defender Natasha Anasi, FC Bucks midfielder Kaitlyn Kerr and Team Boca offensive standouts Laura Weinberg and Gilda Doria will be looking to create a few memories of their own over the next four years.
To the south, ACC rival Clemson did well also, pulling in standout Eclipse Select midfielder Vanessa Laxgang and top goalkeeper Lauren Arnold of Birmingham United.
Out west, Arizona State got a very good goalkeeper of their own, Dallas Texans’ Vittoria Arnold, as well as Albion SC forward Devin Marshall.
Sun Devils’ mentor Kevin Boyd also got signatures from Gilbert Arsenal midfielder Blair Alderson, FC Bucks and FC DELCO midfielder Nicole Battista, Washington Premier midfielder and all-name team member Holland Crook, Washington Premier standout fullback Josie Graybeal, Gig Harbor, Washington defender Kaitlyn Pavlovich, defensive midfielder Rachael Ritter of Utah, and central defender Jasmine Roth of Legends FC in Southern California.
In the Big Ten, Michigan coach Greg Ryan got a solid class including three Top 100 players, FC DELCO’s Meghan Toohey, Seacoast United’s Tori McCombs and Vardar’s Kayla Mannino, plus Mexican U20 National Team player Shelby Chambers-Garcia and Slammers’ Surf Cup MVP Shelby Murphy.
