Opening day of the Disney Qualifier

ORLANDO- The opening day of the Disney Qualifier Soccer Showcase at the ESPN Wide World of Sports started off with humid weather, which came from the previous night's thunderstorms around the Orlando area. The early action was filled with strong action and players hoping to lead their respective clubs to meaningful Sunday games. Here are some of the key matchups from Saturday's slate of matches. 


Chargers SC CLW 2001 Premier U17 (FL) 7-0 FCBescola Northern Virginia 01/02 Boys BLAU 

The weather was humid on Saturday morning, but the temperatures were about on par with how hot the Chargers SC CLW 2001 Premier's offensive game was in tune, as they scored to the tune of seven goals en route to a 7-0 victory over FCBescola Northern Virginia 01/02 Boys BLAU.

The first half was totally dominated by the Chargers of Clearwater, FL, with four of the seven goals being scored in the opening 35 minutes of play. There was no shortage of standouts all across the board for the Chargers, as Samuel Idinge, Carlos Cruz and Dom Lee were just a few amongst the several who helped contribute in the barrage of goals.

Northern Virginia just couldn't slow the Chargers down whatsoever in the second half, yielding three more goals in the process. Collin Moncayo was one of the couple bright spots for Northern Virginia, as the forward made some spirited runs on attacks and had the only scoring opportunities for FCBescola.

"In a qualifier, I tell the guys it's always important to start off on the right foot in this tournament," Chargers coach Ryan Seidl said. "We are a very technical team and for us to start off with a big win like this is very good for us moving forward."

 

FKK 01 Florida Kraze Black U17 (FL) 1-0 2001 Pre-Academy (FL)

Starting off with a win is of the utmost importance on Day 1 of the Disney Qualifier Soccer Showcase for all the team's that take part in the tournament over the Labor Day weekend and FKK Florida Kraze Black understood that urgency. The fairly new team came together and pulled away with a 1-0 victory over 2001 Pre-Academy (FL).

It was a defensive effort by both clubs from possession to possession, as piecing together cohesive passing and attacks was a troublesome area throughout the morning. The one moment that an offensive spurt was attained happened in the 38th minute, when Collin Miller notched the game's only goal.

2001 Pre-Academy spent the rest of the match in search of the equalizer and could not muster up the one goal to tie up the game. Forward Gabriel Colon became a solid playmaker in trying initiate attacks for Pre-Academy, setting up a few scoring chances for his fellow teammates.

"It's always nice to start off this tournament with a win," FKK Florida Kraze coach Timothy Roberts said. "This is the first win for this brand new group of kids. This is actually our first tournament together as a team, so it's great for us to pickup a win early here."

 

Davie United SC Sharks 2001 Blue U17 (FL) 2-1 JayFC Armada FC 01 Elite I U17 (FL)

One of the most entertaining U17 boy's games on the day came from the contest between Davie United SC Sharks 2001 Blue and JayFC Armada FC 01 Elite I, as the game came down to the final minutes to be decided. After racing out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, Davie United was lulled to sleep and taken by surprised with a late rally by JayFC Armada, whom fell just short on Saturday. 

The first of the two goals scored by Davie United was put in the back of net by Miguel Espinosa, who notched the score within the first five minutes of the match. Davie United's forwards and midfielders stayed aggressive all throughout the opening half and added another goal just before heading into intermission. Gabriel Manzo ended up with the latter goal for Davie United.

After halftime, however, Davie United's attack took a step back and JayFC Armada turned up the pressure on all ends and eventually scored on a goal by Zachary Tretler in the 61st minute of play. The final several minutes was played under a frantic pace by JayFC Armada, which was in search of the equalizer.

 

Celtic FC Florida 01 U17 (FL) 1-0 Space Coast United 2001 Travel U17 (FL)

If you like chippy matches, then Saturday afternoon's matchup between Celtic FC Florida and Space Coast United would've been a game to watch, as both teams played physical for 70 minutes and defenses reigned supreme throughout. Celtic FC Florida were able to notch the contest's only goal and escaped with a 1-0 victory.

It looked like Space Coast United 2001 Travel was going to be able to take an early lead over Celtic FC Florida, as midfielder Cooper Bywater had several early chances to score on the Celtic's defense. One example was in the 27th minute when Bywater's left footed shot went wide right harmlessly past the crossbar.

Harley Myers made the most of his rare opportunities to take shots on goal, as the midfielder scored in the 44th minute just by goalkeeper John Stromenger and gave Celtic FC Florida. 1-0 advantage. That's all they would need, closing off the final 26 minutes with strong defense on the back end.

"We just wanted to keep our composure and not get any cards heading into our next game," Celtic FC Florida Richard Legg said.
