BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (June 22, 2014) – The 2014 US Youth Soccer Region II (Midwest) Championships continued Sunday with the second day of preliminary play at the John Ankeney Soccer Complex in Beavercreek, Ohio. More than 200 games have been completed, by the nearly 4,000 players participating, and tomorrow’s action will determine which Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls teams advance to the semifinals.

Ohio South Youth Soccer hosted the Region II Championships in 2010 and is happy to once again showcase the prestigious tournament.

“Ohio South Youth Soccer Association is proud to once again host the US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships in Beavercreek,” said Executive Director of Ohio South Youth Soccer Association, Tom Frisbie. “OSYSA, and Southern Ohio in general, hope to demonstrate to our soccer friends from our surrounding states that we can put on a fantastic event that will leave all 12,000 visitors with a desire to return to the area in the future.”

Host Ohio South Youth Soccer Association has 21 representatives in the tournament – at least one Boys and Girls team in each age group.

“It feels great to represent Ohio South,” said Michael Lawrence, head coach for U-14 Boys team OP Green (OH-S). “It’s nice that we don’t have to go so far, and get to be close. Families get to come, and it’s a little different for the kids so we’re excited to actually be here.”

OP Green defeated U-14 Boys team LTSC Showcase (IL) with four first half goals. OP Green’s Noah Paoletti started the match with a goal in the 10th minute, and Kurt Lehmkuhl followed with another in the 25th minute. Luke Kiley scored a pair of goals in the 35th and 45th minutes to produce the 4-0 result.

Three Ohio South teams are already guaranteed a spot at this year’s National Championships after qualifying through the US Youth Soccer National League: U-17 Boys CUP Gold 96/97, U-17 Girls Kings Hammer Academy and U-18 Boys CUP Gold 95/96. CUP Gold 96/97 is 0-1-1, tying U-17 Boys team Minneapolis United 97 Cyclones (MN) 3-3 in the second day of play. Kings Hammer Academy (OH-S) got their second win of the tournament after defeating U-17 Girls Javanon 97 Black (KY) 5-0. And CUP Gold 95/96 (1-0-1) also got a tie in their second match, a 1-1 result against U-18 Boys CRSA/ISC 95-96 Boys (IA).

In the Under-13 age groups, Ohio South is represented by Boys team KHA B'00 Red and Girls team CUP Gold 00-01. KHA Red was defeated 4-1 in today’s match against U-13 Boys Minneapolis United Pirates (MN), and CUP Gold 00-01 remains undefeated after their 3-1 win against U-13 Girls J.B. Marine Rasch (MO).

Ohio South has two teams in the Under-14 Girls age group: CUP Gold 99/00 and Kings Hammer Academy Red. CUP Gold 99/00 tied their first round robin match, but demonstrated they were not a team to take lightly after their 6-0 win versus DASC U14G Black (SD). Kings Hammer Academy Red got their second tie in the tournament, playing a competitive 2-2 match against SC Waukesha U14 Blue 1 (WI).

In the Under-15 Boys group, Ohio Galaxies FC (OH-S) lost 1-0 to Michigan Wolves 99 (MI) after a Nickolas Massey goal late in the 80th minute, and Blast FC Red (OH-S) tied Michigan Jaguars 99 (MI) 3-3 and head to tomorrow’s match with a 1-0-1 record. Under-15 Girls team CUP Crew Jrs Gold from Ohio South got a 4-0 win versus JUSC Premier (IA), and begin tomorrow with a 1-1-0 record.

KHA Red from Ohio South played a competitive 2-1 match against U-16 Girls IPSC 98 Elite. Both teams went into halftime scoreless. The second half saw a very well executed goal by KHA Red in the 45th minute when Jessica DeJesus crossed a ball to Peighton Cook. Cook set it up with a touch to Haley Jordahland right in front of the box and Jordahl shot it in for the lead. In the 63rd minute IPSC’s offense took a shot and KHA’s keeper was able to punch it out, but Stasia Mallin got the rebound and got the equalizer. The play was both ways, but Jessica DeJesus found the game winner in the 73rd minute sending a strike right from the 18 yard box.

In the Under-16 Boys age group, Ohio South team OGFC 97 Elite lost 2-1 to SC Waukesha U16 Blue (WI), and OP Eagles Green from Ohio South won 2-1 to Kutis Academy Gold (MO). The U-17 Boys Ohio South Classics Eagles 96/97 Red won 4-1 to United 97 International (KY), and on the Girls side U-17 team Ohio Galaxies FC 96 Elite lost 2-0 to NSA Jaguars (IL). Under-18 Girls team KHA Red from Ohio South remains undefeated after their 2-0 win versus Iowa Rush U18G Nike (IA), and Under-19 Boys Crew Juniors (OH-S) also got a win - 3-1 against Sporting Iowa (IA).

Three Ohio South teams compete in the U-19 Girls division: CUP / CSA GU19 and KHA Red in Group C and OP Eclipse in Group A. KHA Red defeated CUP / CSA with two second half goals by Emily Cummings and Anna Cornacchione. And OP Eclipse continued their winning streak, getting their second victory after a 2-0 match against LSC EGA Booyah (NE).

“This is a great environment,” said Coach Michael Lawrence. “You’re playing the champs from every state. Every team presents a different challenge so it makes it tougher for all the teams to prepare because every game is different in itself. It’s a big motivation for us to get to Regionals and then once you’re here, obviously everyone’s goal is to win it. We’ve got a good chance. The Region II Championships is an awesome experience for our kids.”

Players participating in the tournament - from 14 US Youth Soccer State Associations - not only get the opportunity to play competitive soccer against top teams in the Midwest, but also get the chance to expose their talents in front of more than 150 college coaches in attendance.

Regional winners will earn a berth to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, July 22-27, at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-14 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 96 teams.
