Second Weekend of GA TX Canceled
The second weekend of the Girls Academy League Showcase in Austin, Texas is canceled, the league posted on social media on Monday night. The adverse weather conditions in Texas and throughout the country were cited as the reasons for canceling the event.
The second weekend of the event was scheduled to feature some of the top U15 and U16 girls club soccer teams in the country. The first weekend of the event wrapped up on Sunday as the U18/19 and U17 teams were able to squeeze in a couple of games despite challenging weather conditions - in the mid-20s for temperature with a wind chill in the low teens. The teams on location were able to play a game or two, but some teams were unable to make it to the event due to the extreme weather conditions and unsafe travel.
The next event for the Girls Academy League is scheduled for early March in North Carolina for the U13-14 age groups. The U15-U19 age groups are scheduled for an event in Florida in April at the IMG Academy Complex.
The unusual freeze sweeping Texas has been challenging on the club soccer leagues. The ECNL was also scheduled to hold an event in Texas last weekend, but that league canceled the event on Thursday. US Youth Soccer was also scheduled to host an event in Texas as part of the newly launched Showcases, but that event scheduled for Feb. 19-21 was also canceled.
