TDS Scouting Report: Barca's Ben Lederman
By now, Ben Lederman is the worst-kept secret in U.S. youth development. But in several ways he’s still a somewhat enigmatic one.
Lederman’s been on and off with Barcelona’s La Masia since first joining the prestigious academy more than a half decade ago, and by the time he first started getting call-ups with the U14 BNT in 2013, he was already in Catalonia. Lederman was forced back home due to FIFA’s transfer slap in 2015, and after spending a year training at IMG Academy with U17 MNT residency, he was officially re-admitted late in 2016. And as of January 2017, he’s back and training again with the Spanish mega-club.
Lederman’s a bit of an enigma for American fans precisely because he’s spent almost his entire developmental career shielded by distance and academy. Nobody actually watches Barca Juvenil games, so our entire litmus for gauging his talent at this point comes from more visible national team appearances.
Lederman, the subject of today’s TDS Scouting Report, goes under the microscope in an effort to peel back the layers on one of the more intriguing prospects on the American youth national team map.
