There’s another beast from the East rising at the Scorpions SC on Boston’s South Shore.

While older teams coached by Keith Caldwell and featuring Kristen and Samantha Mewis of U17 Girls National Team fame have helped lift the club to national prominence, the U14 squad of coach Fred Marks is taking a back seat to no one.

Most recently the team rolled through the field at the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, earning three shutout victories and then a 3-1 triumph in the final over Virginia club Chantilly SC.

The squad is also currently undefeated in the Region I Premier League’s North division, with a 5-0-0 record and a 19-3 goal difference. They will attempt to run the table this weekend in New Jersey with matches against 2nd place PDA Celtic (their semifinal opponents in Richmond) and Long Island club Albertson Fury.

Marks said the team’s success is a result of simple training, not stifling creativity and great team chemistry.

In the simple training department, Marks focuses on four areas: passing, receiving, spacing and angles.

“That keeps it as simple as possible, but we do these things extremely well,” Marks said. “It’s the basic, fundamental principles and basic fundamental skills. That’s it.”

Marks, who has coached the team since it was playing in the U10 age group, said the focused training meshes well with giving players freedom on the field.

“On their own they can make a few things up. I allow them to be as creative as they want,” he said. “We have had players come to the team with phenomenal talent but no fundamentals. So we train them like we would a U11 player on how to strike a ball, how to receive. We’ve had some kids come with raw physical talent, but their technique needs to be polished. We’re as skillful as any team we’ve seen, and I don’t stifle (creativity) at all. We put them in a lot of situations where they can be creative. I encourage it. When they get it, we want them to keep it, spread out and pass the ball.”

The squad consists mainly of South Shore area players, but this year has begun to add players from farther away as the squad’s reputation grows.

Marks said the team’s chemistry is exceptional.

“It’s the most fun team I’ve had,” he said. “It’s almost like a boys team. They get in practice and kill each other and laugh about it. There’s a lot of pushing and cheating and fighting in a good-natured way. It’s a really close group. I’ve never heard a cross word in four years I’ve been with them, from the players, parents or anything. There’s a lot of teams I couldn’t say that about.”

Marks added that the team’s focus on player development didn’t always translate to on-field success.

“We take the Bill Belichick approach of one game at a time. We don’t worry about them, we worry about us,” he said. “The team is naturally competitive, but we spent a bunch of time where we were not winning. We weren’t getting through to the finals at a lot of the tournaments we played in. We were very small.  Now the kids have matured physically, but we kept the same kids.”
