The United States kicks off the latest quest for an appearance at an Under-17 World Cup this week in Mexico.

The Women’s U17 Concacaf Championship will send two teams from the region to this year’s World Cup. Host nation Dominican Republic accounts for the other spot. That means stakes will be high in the semifinals, as the two finalists will secure a spot.

For this specific competition, the U.S. has been dominant, winning five of the seven tournaments dating back to 2008. Translating that into World Cup success at this age group has proved elusive; the team finished as runners up in 2008, the first edition, and a quarterfinalist finishing in 2022 was the best since.

Eleven of the 21 players were part of the 18-player roster that competed at the Concacaf Championship back in 2022. That’s a decent level of turnover, though part of that is managed by the addition of three extra roster spots for the competition.

Preview the competition, which begins on February 2, below.
