U20s top T&T 1-0, advance to knockout game
There was nothing particularly pretty about it, but the U.S. U20 Men’s National Team squeezed past Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday night in Jamaica. One more win and the U.S. is in the U20 World Cup.
LA Galaxy Homegrown Bradford Jamieson scored off a well-measured counter in the 78th minute to guide the U.S. to a unprepossessing 1-0 victory in CONCACAF qualifying group play. The U.S. only needed a draw to advance to the knockout stage, which is reserved for the second and third-placed teams in each of CONCACAF’s two groups. A loss would've knocked the U.S. out entirely.
The win, though, makes life a bit easier, since it guaranteed the U.S. the top seed out of Group A. With Canada and Haiti both eliminated out of Group B, the U.S. will face the lowest seed out of El Salvador, Honduras or Cuba on Saturday depending on what happens on the final day of that group’s matches. While the U.S. can conceivably play two knockout games, it only needs to win one of those to punch a ticket to the World Cup in New Zealand later this year.
Meanwhile, Mexico and Panama, which took all 15 points from Group A, will meet to determine the champion.
