An expanded edition of the FIFA World Cup and a robust talent pool of 2008 players based in the United States has presented a unique opportunity for U.S.-based talent.

The field of 48 teams is set to feature more than 20 players from clubs in the United States competing for other countries.

Here are some of the names to know.

Felix Contreras, Mexico

A center back from Real Salt Lake, Contreras is originally from California. He’s a quality and stable option at the back.

Nikolai Pierre, Haiti

Haiti’s arrival at the tournament brings with it Pierre, who is on the books with the Orlando City SC Academy. 

Van Parker, Canada

One of the top 09s in the country is rostered with Canada. He’s an extremely talented striker who has a big opportunity to play up an age group.

Antonio Riquelme, Chile

The third player based at Real Salt Lake is a two-way attacking midfielder who contributes on both sides of the ball. NYCFC forward Zidane Yanez joins him on the Chile roster.

Mayson Barillas, El Salvador

An attacking midfielder with D.C. United’s Academy, Barillas is set to play up, born in 2009.

Ethan Scally, Japan

The LAFC Academy goalkeeper is committed to Cornell. He will battle for the starting role in goal for Japan. He is committed to play at Cornell.

David Garcia, Venezuela 

Garcia inked a two-year MLS NEXT Pro contract with the Houston Dynamo this year after progressing through the academy.

Josue Fuentes, Honduras

The FC Dallas Academy goalkeeper has regularly been involved with the Honduran youth setup in the buildup to the World Cup.

Lucas Lee, Indonesia

Lee has made the long trip to compete in Asian qualifying tournaments from Ballistic United in Northern California. Listed as a defender for Indonesia, he can also play in central midfield.

Anisse Saidi, Tunisia

After moving from the Union to San Diego FC, where he signed a pro deal, Saidi is set to feature for Tunisia. A dual national who has been called into U.S. camps in the past, he played nine minutes in MLS this season.
