U.S. U17 star makes college commitment

U.S. U17 star makes college commitment
November 23, 2011

Tarik Salkicic has played soccer all around the world, so you’ll have to excuse him if he sounds a bit understated when announcing his recent college commitment.

Salkicic, the No. 12 ranked player in our Top 100 ranking and a member of the U.S. U17 Men’s National Team, will play his college soccer at Tulsa. For most players this would be a groundbreaking development, but Salkicic views it as just the next phase of his career.

“The national team has allowed me to compare myself to players across the globe, and see how they train and compete,” Salkicic said. “So I know exactly what I have to do.”

A standout of Florida, Salkicic also strongly considered committing to Akron and FIU but said he enjoys the hospitality of the people in the South region. He may not find his competition quite so welcoming but he’ll undoubtedly be ready.

Salkicic, a central midfielder, was a member of the U17 World Cup team in Mexico last summer where he learned quite a bit.

He envisions himself one day taking his talents overseas and Tulsa is the latest step in that direction.

Virginia star Peter Lam made news of his own recently by committing to local George Mason. It was the comfort of home that was the main appeal for this talented defender, ranked No. 98 in our 2012 Top 100.

“I've lived in the Fairfax area my whole life, so it felt right for me to play college soccer for my hometown,” Lam explained. “Being so close to home also makes it easier for all of my family and friends to come watch me play.  Their support has been crucial to my development and I'm glad that they can continue to watch me.”

Lam says the closest challenger to George Mason was Wake Forest, where he liked the idea of competing in the ACC but not enough to sway him from his top choice.
