U.S. U17 WNT books place in World Cup
The U.S. U17 Women’s National Team booked its spot in the 2016 World Cup on Friday with a 5-0 win over Canada thanks to goals from Alexa Spaanstra, Jordan Canniff, Civana Kuhlmann, Sophia Smith, and Frankie Tagliaferri. Kennedy Wesley finished with two assists while Spaanstra had the other assist. The U.S.victory in the semifinal of the 2016 U17 CONCACAF Championship allowed the favorites to claim one of the three spots at the World Cup for the region.
Canada has a shot to join the U.S. in the World Cup in the third place game against Haiti on Sunday. The Caribbean side defeated Canada 2-1 in group play. The U.S. takes on Mexico in the final on Sunday at 6 p.m. (ET) on Fox Sports 2.
Friday’s win over Canada was the best performance from the U.S. at the event in Grenada. After rolling through group play with three wins, the U.S. looked capable but never hit it into the higher gears from the opening games of the tournament. In the semifinal, the favorites of the event let it rip with a knockout showing.
