USMNT World Cup Squad Development: Part 2

With the 2026 World Cup kicking off this week, it's an apt juncture to examine how the 26 players on the roster came to this point.

Here's part two examining the development background and pathways each U.S. player took to the squad.

F Christian Pulisic
Current Club: AC Milan (ITA)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2015)
Youth Club: PA Classics

The longtime veteran of the national team jumped from PA Classics to Borussia Dortmund at just 16 years old. He was a fixture of the Residency Program and youth national teams.

D Tim Ream
Current Club: Charlotte FC
Youth National Team Experience: N/A
Youth Club: St. Louis Scott Gallagher
College: Saint Louis

Ream is the oldest member of the squad. He’s a St. Louis local who played college soccer at the local powerhouse. After getting drafted by the Red Bulls, he eventually moved abroad to Fulham before recently returning to MLS.

M Gio Reyna
Current Club: Borussia Monchengladbach (GER)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2019)
Youth Club: New York City FC

The NYCFC Academy graduate has yet to play in MLS, signing directly with Borussia Dortmund. Set to play at his second World Cup, he signed with Gladbach last year. 

D Chris Richards
Current Club: Crystal Palace (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U20, U23
Youth Club: Hoover SC/Texans SC Houston/FC Dallas 

The Alabama native battled his way into pro soccer, going from Hoover SC to Texans SC Houston in the Development Academy. That eventually nabbed him a spot with FCD, where he signed pro before earning a move to Bayern Munich.

D Antonee Robinson
Current Club: Fulham FC (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U18, U20, U23
Youth Club: Everton FC (ENG)

Part of the European developed contingent, Robinson is a veteran of English academies. He's closing in on 200 appearances with Fulham. 

D Miles Robinson
Current Club: FC Cincinnati
Youth National Team Experience: U20, U23
Youth Club: Boston Bolts
College: Syracuse

The Massachusetts native made his way to the professional ranks via the Generation adidas program. He was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in his season season with the Orange in 2016, getting drafted by Atlanta United the year after.

M Cristian Roldan
Current Club: Seattle Sounders FC
Youth National Team Experience: U20
Youth Club: Union Independiente
College: Washington

Plucked out of a Southern California club by the University of Washington, Roldan is another player to make his way to the national team via college and the Generation adidas program. He was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year back in 2013 in his first season at UW, which he joined after earning the 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year at El Rancho High School.

D Joe Scally
Current Club: Borussia Monchengladbach (GER)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2019)
Youth Club: New York City FC

The outside back played at the 2019 Under-17 World Cup in Brazil, and was eventually transferred from NYCFC to Gladbach. He’s made more than 150 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

M Malik Tillman
Current Club: Bayer Leverkusen (GER)
Youth National Team Experience: U15
Youth Club: Bayern Munich

The German-American came through the Bayern Munich Academy, and has since returned to Germany with Leverkusen. He made stops at Rangers (Scotland) and PSV (Netherlands) along the way.

D Auston Trusty
Current Club: Celtic FC (SCO)
Youth National Team Experience: U17 World Cup (2015), U19, U20 World Cup (2017), U23
Youth Club: Philadelphia Union

Trusty passed on the college route, committing to North Carolina but ultimately starting his career as a pro with a Union contract. He was traded to the Colorado Rapids, signing with Arsenal and spending time on loan at various spots in the United Kingdom. 

GK Matt Turner
Current Club: New England Revolution
Youth National Team Experience: N/A
Youth Club: Clarkstown SC
College: Fairfield

The 31-year-old shot-stopper is on loan with the Revolution from Lyon in France. It’s unclear if he’ll ever return, but the move ensured his World Cup spot. His journey is well-documented, from college soccer to the national team.

F Tim Weah
Current Club: Juventus (ITA)
Youth National Team Experience: U14, U15, U17 World Cup (2017), U20 World Cup (2019), U23
Youth Club(s): BW Gottschee/New York Red Bulls/Paris St. Germain

A New York native, Weah is another longtime youth national team veteran who was able to make it all the way to the full squad. He moved to Europe when he was 14, where his time at the PSG Academy launched his career.

F Haji Wright
Current Club: Coventry City (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U14, U15, U17 World Cup (2015), U18, U19
Youth Club: LA Galaxy/IMG Academy Residency

The European journeyman has found a home at Coventry City, which earned promotion to the Premier League for the 2026-27 season. He launched his career with Schalke 04, signing as an 18-year-old from the Galaxy Academy. Along with that, he was part of the U.S. U17 Residency Program. 

F Alejandro Zendejas
Current Club: Club America (MEX)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17
Youth Club: FC Dallas

Zendejas makes his World Cup debut on the back of a strong series of performances with Club America in Liga MX. He signed his first contract with FC Dallas in 2014 at the age of 16, and his journey leads him to a spot on the roster to compete on U.S. soil.
