Weather forces tourney to go to penalties
February 21, 2011

PHOENIX — After losing Saturday to torrential downpour, participants in the SC Del Sol President’s Day Tournament worked furiously here Sunday to get in all scheduled games.

With so many games to play, tournament officials decided to replace match play with penalty kick shootouts for the entire day at the Reach 11 complex in Phoenix. The boys and girls teams clustered all over one field made for a chaotic scene full of mixed emotions.

Both players and coaches alike were frustrated that Monday’s semifinal pairings had to be determined by penalty kicks, but understood that the circumstances were out of anyone’s control.

“Obviously nobody can control the weather and you don’t know, but it’s unfortunate,” U19 Vardar Michigan (men’s) coach Demir Muftari said. “We came a long way and we were hoping to get some games.”

Muftari’s team fell in its quarterfinal shootout with SC Del Sol (AZ).

“We wanted to come here and get some games and keep going as a team, getting ready for our spring season back home in Michigan,” Muftari added. “It’s definitely a frustrating turn of events the way it’s unfolded for us this weekend.”

Though many teams like Vardar left the field disappointed Sunday, just as many teams came out on the other side of circumstances.

In the U17 girl’s quarterfinals, Cap FC United (N. CA) shutout Westminster AFC (CO), needing just four shooters to advance to the semifinals.

Cap FC goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski didn’t allow a goal, continuing a string of strong performances on the weekend.

“She’s very athletic and very focused,” CAP FC coach Frank Ramirez said of Lewandowski, who has committed to play at Cal State Stanislaus.

“We’ve been doing very well and a lot of that’s because of her. Chelsea’s just a solid goalkeeper.”

While many teams were left frustrated with the circumstances or their ultimate results, others saw the hectic atmosphere as a chance to bond with other teams and support each other.

“This is different, so for me it’s about the journey,” U19 Blue Knights SC ’93 (men’s) coach Martin Villegas said. “We won’t remember the games, we’ll remember this.”

Villegas was referring to the camaraderie that had developed between his Utah team and Carmel United SC (IN), a team the Blue Knights defeated Saturday before play was suspended. When the Blue Knights topped Rio Vista FC (NM), they were greeted with a raucous player tunnel by Carmel United, who went on to defeat Neusport FC two shootouts later.

Carmel United got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Tristan Lain in the shootout, while Elliott Reiff put in the game-winning shot to send his team to the semifinals.

In U15 Boys action, Neusport FC ’96 (NV) eliminated Vardar to move on.

“It’s always tough to win or lose with PKs,” Neusport coach Scott Hunt said. “We were hoping that for the quarters we could get on the field and play somebody.”

Hunt had yet another perspective on the altered tournament format, proposing that the relatively restful day may have given his injury-plagued team a chance to get healthy. Hunt said one of the team’s top players was battling an ankle injury.

“This might work out for us,” Hunt said. “But I feel bad for the teams that didn’t get to advance. It’s really a tough one.”

While players stood arm in arm cheering on their teammates, the annual tournament inched closer to an end. While spending an entire day shooting penalty kicks and waiting may have offered teams a chance to lose focus, teams were mostly planning to approach the semifinals with their original game plans.

“We’re going to have to come out sharp,” Ramirez said, explaining his team’s possession oriented style. “There’s nothing we’re going to do differently.”

All of Monday’s semifinal and final matches will take place at the Scottsdale Soccer Complex beginning at 8 a.m. Tournament officials were also waiting for word on the availability of the Reach 11 complex for friendly matches in hopes of getting teams that haven’t played a match yet the opportunity to do so.
