Younger Champs Crowned at Dallas Cup
Today was a day for the youngsters at Pizza Hut Park as the U13, U14 and U15 age groups were decided inside the home of FC Dallas.
U14 Championship: Fullerton Rangers 0, FC Dallas 0 (Fullerton wins on penalties, 5-4)
The U14 Championship saw home team FC Dallas Premier take on another Californian club, Fullerton Rangers. With both teams boasting perfect 5-0 records in the tournament, this one was sure to be a close match and that held true through the first half. The two sides battled in the midfield without creating any clear scoring opportunities on goal.
The rest of the match was a stalemate with neither team doing much to score a goal meaning after 20 minutes of overtime the match headed to penalties. Fullerton goalkeeper Keith Murphy came up huge in post-match penalties, making the only save to give Fullerton the U14 Dallas Cup Championship with a 5-4 penalty kick shootout victory.
U13 Championship: Nomads 5, Houstonians 2 (OT)
The first game of the day featured Houstonians FC Red from Houston against Nomads SC from San Diego. Both teams played some fantastic soccer in an evenly matched game that ended 2-2 after 70 minutes meaning the game headed to 20 minutes of overtime. In the overtime periods, it was all Nomads scoring three goals to win the U13 Dallas Cup Championship by a score of 5-2.
Houstonians got off to a flying start in the 6th minute with Carlos Valdez coming up from the midfield to latch onto a long ball, head past the on-rushing keeper and tap into the net. Nomads equalized in the 26th minute through a Joe Gallardo strike to send the teams into halftime at 1-1.
In the second half, Nomads completed their comeback, taking the lead through a Jonathan Leal goal. The Texas side scored the goal of the match in the 60th minute with Lucio Martinez scoring a brilliant volleyed goal from the top of the box to send it to overtime.
In overtime, a penalty was awarded to Nomads for a foul on Gallardo which captain Alexis Velela scored. From there Nomads would add two more goals late and bring the U13 trophy back to California.
U15 Championship: FC Dallas 2, Solar SC 0
In their second shot at a trophy, FC Dallas would win one for the home fans, topping Solar SC in an all-DFW championship game. Forward Antonio Aguilar scored goals in each half to give FC Dallas their first ever Dallas Cup Championship .
