#1 Rangers Upset by #23 Orediggers; 4-3 Final in RMAC Championships

DENVER, Colo.:  #1 Regis University men's soccer took their first loss this Sunday, falling to #23 Colorado School of Mines 4-3 in the RMAC tournament championship match.  612 fans came out to support both sides in the RMAC event, and both sides stayed strong throughout regulation play.

The Rangers outshot the Orediggers 19-9 and lead 11-3 with corner kicks, but could not stop the Mines offense before the clock ran out.  Regis now stands at 17-1-1 overall for the 2012 season.

Mines went up first in the 11th minute of play and again in the first minute of the second half to go up 2-0 over the Rangers.

In the sixth minute of the second half, junior Justin Ortinau was fouled just inside the 18 yard box, earning a penalty kick attempt.  Senior Stephen Reed sent the penalty kick to the bottom left for the goal.

Four minutes later, Mines sent another goal through to go up 3-1.

Regis answered again seven minutes later after senior Taylor Diem sent the ball down the field to sophomore Martin Maybin at the top of the 18 yard box.  Maybin beat his defenders and passed the ball in to Ortinau.  He went up against the Mines goalkeeper and shot to the bottom left for the goal, putting the game to 3-2 in favor of the Orediggers.

With 10 minutes left in the match, Mines scored a big header off a cross into the 18 yard box.

Regis put a great effort to close the gap, scoring with five minutes left in the match.  Senior defenders David Key and Taylor Diem connected to score the goal.  Key served the ball from midfield in to senior Diem who put a header through to the left of the Mines goalie.

Freshman goalkeeper Christian Nicolosi put up one save in 35 minutes before he was removed from the match due to injury.  Senior Scott Brown put up one save against Mines during his 56 minutes between the posts.

Four Rangers were named to the RMAC All-Tournament team after the match; senior Taylor Diem, junior Justin Ortinau, and sophomores Martin Maybin and Logan Miller.

The NCAA women's soccer selection show will air at 5:30 PM on Monday, November 5th.
