September 12, 2014

Denver, Colorado: The #10 Regis University Rangers men’s soccer team kicked off the 2014 season on the road with a 2-0 win over the Rogers State Hillcats (2-1).  With a starting 11 made up of ten returners and one newcomer, the Rangers kept a clean sheet earning their first shutout of the year.

Scoreless for much of the first half until the 41st minute-mark when sophomore defender Louis Barrow (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) connected off a set piece with a diving header from the backside past the Hillcat goalkeeper.  Barrow gave RU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The game-winning goal would come in the 77th minute from Ranger All-American Martin Maybin (Belfast, Northern Ireland) beating his defender off a through ball from senior midfielder Arnthor Kristinsson (Akranes, Iceland).

Goalkeepers Christian Nicolosi and Connor Adkisson split halves, each recording 45 minutes of play and tallying two saves a piece.  The Hillcats edged out the Rangers 12-11 in shots and a 10-6 advantage on corner kicks.

Regis has a day off and will round the weekend off on the road against Northeastern State on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m.
