#11 Coastal Carolina Advances to Semifinals

Published: November 12, 2013

CONWAY – Sergio Camargo, who was named to the Big South All-Freshman team on Monday, scored in each half to push top-seeded Coastal Carolina past eighth-seeded Winthrop by a 2-1 final in Big South Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament Quarterfinal action on a cool and blustery night at the CCU Soccer Field.

The win sends the 11th-ranked Chanticleer (15-4-0) to the tournament’s semifinal round where they will face fifth-seeded Radford at 4 p.m. on Friday at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. The loss ends Winthrop’s season with an 11-7-1 record.

After Winthrop took an early lead, Camargo scored in the 27th minute to level the score at one then scored again in the 61st minute to provide the 2-1 final.

“Sergio’s confidence was great tonight,” said head coach Shaun Docking. “He played like we all know he can and I was pleased with his work rate. He finishing was superb and that the difference tonight.”

Pedro Ribeiro led Coastal with five shot attempts, while the Eagles were paced by two shots each off the foot of Adriano Negri and Pol Sole.

Winthrop weathered numerous Coastal Carolina attacks in the early going before finding the game’s opening goal in the 24th minute on their first true attacking threat of the game. A Patrick Barnes corner kick was flicked into the box where it rattled around before Kyle Kennedy was able to get his foot on it. Kennedy struck the bouncing ball past a diving Devin Cook and into the side netting for his first of the season.

The Chants remained composed after the Winthrop goal and used the ensuing three minutes to build toward a goal of their own. Coastal’s work was rewarded as Camargo found the back of the net 26:07 mark of play. Camargo, who corralled a loose ball following a blocked Ribeiro shot, beat a defender in the box and slotted his shot past Winthrop’s Fabian Broich.

The teams exchanged stretches of possession over the final minutes of the half with neither able to break through.

Camargo broke the 1-1 deadlock in the 61st minute with his second score of the night and seventh of the season. Shawn McLaws sent a long ball from the defensive side of midfield toward the top of the box. The ball appeared harmless, but a Winthrop defender misplayed a bounce and allowed it through. Camargo took the ball and easily beat Broich to the right side for the eventual game-winning goal. Of Camargo’s seven counters on the season, four have proven to be game-winners.

Coastal continued to attack; tallying five shots and two corner over the ensuing 15 minutes in efforts to find a third goal. Unable to find an insurance goal the Chants shifted their focus on defending the rest of the way.

Coastal’s backline of McLaws, Uchenna Uzo, Simon Laugsand and Ridge Robinson held strong over the final 10 minutes of play. The quartet turned away numerous threatening crosses and blocked several shots to ensure the Chanticleer victory.

Coastal Carolina finished the game with a 17-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The Chants also earned eight corner kicks to Winthrop’s four.

CCU's Cook earned the win with a one-save performance to improve his season record to 14-4-0. Winthrop's Broich (2-4-0) took the loss after despite making four saves.
