#15 UConn Edges Rutgers Men’s Soccer 1-0

October 9, 2013

STORRS, Conn.  (October 9, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team was edged by No. 15 and American Athletic Conference (AAC) Preseason favorite, No. 15 Connecticut, on Wednesday with the Huskies taking a 1-0 victory off an early penalty kick.

UConn’s lone goal came in the game’s 16th minute with Colin Bradley finding his way into the Scarlet Knight goal off a penalty kick.  The rest of the Huskies’ 21 shots on the night were thwarted, including five on goal that were stopped by Scarlet Knight goalkeeper David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.).

"There were several things I felt we could have done to prevent the sequence that led to the penalty kick call," said head coach Dan Donigan.  "That was upsetting in itself, but I thought we played better in the second half.  Unfortunately it wasn't enough to get the goal back so we leave with a loss on a penalty kick that was avoidable.  We can't dwell on what happened and need to prepare for Louisville on the road."

The loss dropped RU to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2-0 in AAC play.  UConn, the first of two nationally ranked conference foes the Scarlet Knights take on this week, improved to 4-2-4 overall and 1-0-3 in league action.

Rutgers was outshot 22-11 by UConn and was led by midfielders sophomore Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) and freshman Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) with three shots each.  Two of Sa’s three shots were on goal.  The Huskies also held an 8-1 advantage in corners.

The Rutgers men’s soccer team returns to action at Louisville on Saturday.  The Cardinals are ranked No. 11 by the NSCAA and No. 19 by Soccer America.
